In 2021 four dudes born and raised in Logan with a passion for making loud noises and growing mullets finally found a singer for their band via Tinder. The result of which is exactly what you’d expect from four dudes with mullets and a conventionally attractive girl who grew up singing in choirs. Formerly a surf rock band, Couch Surfers now make Indie Pop Rock with the band consisting of two guitarists, bassist, drummer, and a vocalist.
Their brand of entertainment fuses indie aussie rock with catchy vocal melodies and authentic anecdotal lyrics. Think Silverchair and Hockey Dad, but sung by a soprano who wears chunky platform heels. Inspired by Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish’s lyricism juxtaposed with a love for 90’s alternative rock and metal, the vocalist Chloe uses both influences as inspiration to write poppy melodies that carry Couch Surfer’s songs. Josh’s gritty distorted solos and Caleb’s crisp tone and Beetles-esk licks perfectly compliment each other despite the contrast. Rhien drives the song with bass heavily influenced by Cliff Burton and Geezer Butler but mellowed by the likes of Paul McCartney and Leland Sklar while Patrick takes out his suppressed rage and stubbornness on his metal boxes in a style inspired by Dave Grohl.
With their high energy performance and perfectly awkward stage banter, you’ll be playing the air guitar and singing all night long. It’s not just their mums that think they’re pretty good either, a Triple j unearthed review from Lu Hill reads ‘Woah, what a voice. The control in the runs and vibrato was unreal’. After the release of their debut EP in October 2021, Couch Surfers are continuing to balance playing gigs at venues in Fortitude Valley such as Black Bear Lodge, Greaser Bar, and Lefty’s Music Hall while furiously writing new music from the lens of adolescence in the modern world to compile into their first full album.
